MANILA, Philippines — Technology giant Google, in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm, earlier today announced Android XR for headsets and glasses in an announcement on Friday, December 13, 2024. Google calls the new operating system 'AI-powered' and says that 'it brings together digital information and the real world to help you watch, work, and explore,' according to the software's landing page.
While the operating system may be new, Google is also bringing Gemini and Circle-to-Search to Android XR, which was previously seen on Android-powered mobile devices. But, as this is the headset version, Google has reimagined the AI features with the interactive XR experience. For the unaware, XR means extended reality, which is a combination of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).

Android XR will also come to glasses in the future but Google seems to prioritize the release first to the brand's headset devices. Although Google began its approach to test Android XR on prototype glasses 'with a small group of users'.
